Getting Started on the Journey

Sometimes that’s the easiest part!

It was a little over a week ago that I announced my plan to publish a children’s book. It’s something I have been thinking about for over 5 years. And honestly I’m usually not one for public proclamations, but I knew doing this would hold me accountable to actually make it happen. Same goes for writing this email.

So now the work begins…

When you start any new project there is usually a sense of excitement around it. It’s new! There is hope and optimism around all the possibilities of what could be. All around there is just a lot of good energy.

But that optimism can quickly fade once you get hit in the face with the reality of all the work that is needed to actually pull it off!

And while that initial energy is enough to get the rock moving, it may not be enough to sustain you as you look to push it all the way up the hill.

So there are two things that I have put in place to make sure I will keep pushing when it gets tough:

  1. My ‘Why’

  2. My Plan

My why is simple. I am doing this because I want to prove to myself that I can. Imposter Syndrome comes in all shapes and sizes but all of it stem from insecurities and fear of failure. Those things have kept me from doing this for 5 years. But not anymore.

(Cue Eye of the Tiger playing in the background as your read the rest of this email…)

My plan is a little more complicated. Because I have never done this before and don’t know everything that needs to be done, I can’t just sit down and write out a super detailed plan.

So, the first thing I did was write down a list of the BIG THINGS that I currently know that have to be done for me to publish.

BIG THINGS

Doing this first helped me get down on paper the things that I know so that I can begin to organize a plan of attack for each.

It’s an essential first step for me that I have neglected to do in the past when starting something new. Instead I just started charging forward which caused as lot of wrong turns and misfires. I’ve learned to first turn over all the pieces, then start putting together the puzzle.

In the next email I will share how I went about organizing these ‘things’ into an actual plan as well as some of the initial work I have started doing on the book itself!

Thank you again for joining me on this journey. This is helping hold me accountable and keep the energy going to push that rock up the hill.
