Lessons Learned & What’s Next

It’s nearly been a month since launch…

I made a decision that could have ruined my entire publishing journey. 😰

Let me back up…

When I first made the announcement that I was going to publish my kids book I set a launch date for April 12th. It was just a date 4 months out that was something for me to shoot for. Finishing the illustrations took longer than I hoped so I ended up having to move the date out a few weeks to May 22nd. After that I made a commitment to myself not to move it again.

As the new launch date got closer, I finished the illustrations, submitted my final files, ordered my proof copy and patiently waited for the final product to arrive. Roughly 2 weeks later, it showed up on my doorstep.

But there was a problem. The interior was too dark. A layer I had added to all the pages to give them texture ended up making it darker than I had wanted. At this point I had two options: 1. Have the final product not be what I wanted OR 2. Fix the file and reupload. The risk with option 2 was that there wasn’t enough time to get another physical proof before launch day. So if there was something wrong with the file, every book would be messed up.

The left side was the first proof and the right is the revised.

So I took the risk. I fixed it and uploaded the new files. And launched my preorder campaign.

The new physical proof took even longer to arrive this time and my book launch campaign was already well under way. At that point I had already sold close to 300 books and I had no idea if the interior was going to be messed up. Day after day I would check the shipping status to see when it would arrive and simply had to hope for the best.

Finally it arrived. I opened up the books and they looked perfect! I nearly passed out I was so relieved. I am really thankful that I took the risk but I have to say it was more stress than I needed. Sometimes in life you just have to take risks. They don’t always pay off…I’m glad this one did.

To date, I have sold nearly 500 copies of the book. 🤯 This is more than I ever imagined. Thank you for all of those of you that have purchased. If you still haven’t picked up a copy, click here to order one today!

If you have, I would love for you to consider buying an additional copy to donate to:

1. You child’s or your local elementary school.
2. Your local library
3. Your child’s classroom

What’s Next? I am going to be offering some free virtual readings for classrooms. If you have a teacher that would like me to do this, please let me know.

Also, I am going to be working on a curriculum and activity sheet to go with this book so teachers can use these in their classroom. Anyone that orders will get it for free!
